BRINGING IT HOME PROJECT

An Innovation in Childcare

What is it?

How are funds used?

How it works?

The Bringing It Home Project (BIHP) is a regional initiative meant to improve childcare accessibility by creating home-based childcare providers in the Monadnock Region. By empowering entrepreneurs, the program aims to create and/or expand 10 new home-based providers by 2028, adding 60 – 120 childcare slots in the region.

Through a collaboration among local agencies, aspiring home-based childcare providers are solicited and carefully vetted. They then receive free licensure consultation, business planning services, childcare provider training, and a grant that will pay for housing improvements needed for licensure.

MEDC was awarded a tax credit grant award in June 2023, which will help providers make home improvements necessary to gain licensure as a home-based childcare provider, and access technical assistance to start and sustain their business.

Why is this initiative important?

The Monadnock region has seen a dramatic decline in childcare capacity, mirroring statewide trends in New Hampshire. Home-based providers have the potential to fill this gap but face major barriers: outdated housing, complex licensing, and limited access to capital. Bring It Home addresses these challenges through three strategies:

  1. Capital Improvements* – Renovations include additions, accessory units, safety upgrades, HVAC, and more.
  2. Licensing & Leadership Support – Business coaching, legal/zoning guidance, and professional development.
  3. Neighborhood Revitalization – Enhancing community trust by building a community hub, while addressing financial and structural barriers to childcare access.

This project is rooted in the idea that care is community infrastructure. By investing in the women and families who already serve as informal pillars of support, we are not just solving a childcare problem—we are reinforcing community trust, building local capacity, and reclaiming economic agency.

*Grants funds for rehabilitation are only eligible for businesses that plan to be in business for ten (10) years. A lien is required on the property during this period due to the financial size of the grant.

Community Connection Creates Opportunity

As more providers become licensed and supported, they gain access to systems and funding streams previously out of reach—breaking cycles of exclusion and empowering them as agents of systemic change. Families who once lacked care now have stable, local options, making it possible to return to work, pursue education, or grow their own businesses.

Program Benefits

Once licensed, home-based childcare providers become eligible for:

  • New Hampshire Child Care Scholarship Program payments for subsidized children.
  • USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) reimbursements for nutritious meals served.
  • Sliding scale tuition payments from families seeking quality care in licensed settings.

This creates stable and ongoing revenue streams that increase annual provider income by an estimated $15,000–$25,000 per provider, depending on enrollment and funding eligibility. The program could generate new annual income across participating providers.

By expanding childcare capacity in rural and underserved areas, Bring It Home directly supports local employers’ ability to attract and retain talent—especially in healthcare, education, and manufacturing sectors where employee turnover due to childcare gaps is high.

Reliable childcare access reduces absenteeism, increases retention, and supports long-term workforce stability, which enhances productivity and competitiveness for local businesses. This has a cumulative effect on economic growth and employer investment in the region.

Childcare enables parents to return to or expand their workforce participation. Each childcare slot created opens up economic productivity:

  • An estimated 100 new childcare slots will be created through this program. This makes it possible for over 100 parents—many of them women—to re-enter the workforce or increase their working hours.
  • In turn, this boosts household earnings, spending, and local tax contributions.

Additionally, the construction and renovation activities associated with this program engage local contractors, electricians, plumbers, and suppliers, creating short-term jobs and injecting funds into local trades and small businesses.

Investments in childcare-related home improvements (e.g., code-compliance, additions, lead remediation) also contribute to the value and livability of the local housing stock, increasing neighborhood pride and stabilizing property values in lower-income areas. These homes become dual-use assets, places to live and earn, creating long-term personal wealth-building opportunities for provider-owners.
